Languages of the Heart / Tungumál Hjartans

What happens when people from different cultures sit down together and simply listen to each other?
This May, a small but meaningful project in Reykjavík is creating space for exactly that. Languages of the Heart is a series of creative workshops that bring immigrants and Icelanders together through poetry, music, and storytelling.
The idea is simple. Instead of focusing on differences, the workshops invite people to share something personal, in their own words, and in their own language if they wish. No experience is needed. Just curiosity, and a willingness to take part.
Poetry here is about noticing, not about being perfect or impressive. About putting words to thoughts, memories, or feelings that don’t always get space in everyday life. And just as importantly, it’s about listening to others do the same.
When people share their stories in this way, something shifts. A poem can open a window into someone else’s world. A voice, even in an unfamiliar language, can feel surprisingly close. It becomes easier to see each other not as “locals” and “newcomers,” but simply as people.
The workshops will take place on 2–3 May at Hafnar.Haus in Reykjavík. Over two days, participants will write, share, and connect in a relaxed and creative setting. Those who take part will also have the chance to record their poems as part of a collective album, including custom music, composed by two Icelandic musicians (María Viktoría Einarsdóttir & Sigrún Kristbjörg Jónsdóttir), and one Dutch musician (Geoffrey Stekelenburg), which will later be released on streaming platforms. A live performance is planned later in the year, where these poems will be brought to life with music.
At its core, the project is about connection. It offers a simple but powerful way to bring people together, through creativity, through listening, and through sharing stories that might otherwise go unheard.
Participation is free, but there are only a limited number of places available. A light lunch will be provided, and childcare can be arranged if needed, making it easier for more people to take part.
Languages of the Heart is funded by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing (Immigrant Fund).
